What is a Board Foot?

What exactly is a board foot?

 

Board footage is a way to measure how much wood is cut or estimate how much lumber you'll be able to get out of your logs. One board foot is equivalent to a board that is 12 inches wide, 12 inches in length, and 1 inch thick OR 6 inches wide, 12 inches in length, and 2 inches thick. Both are equivalent to 144 cubic inches. (But don't worry, we keep track so you don't have to!)
